So you’d like to write a story, but you’re having trouble getting started. How about trying one of these ideas.

Imagine that your mother gave a presentation in your classroom. What did she talk about? How did you feel having her in your room? What did you talk about afterwards?

Think of something that happened to you that you will never forget. Write a story about it. Be sure to include details about the setting (time and place) and other people who were there (characters).

Carry around a notebook for a day. Write down things you see, smell, taste, touch, feel, and conversations that you have. Pick five things from your lists and use them in a story.

If someone wrote a book about you, what would they write?

Pretend you are a character from one of your favorite books. Write a journal entry for that character.

Imagine that you are taller or shorter than everyone else in your family or class. What are some problems you might have? How could your size be a good thing?

What machines did you or your family use today - a car, computer, fax machine, tv, microwave, washing machine, dishwasher, electric drill, vacuum? What would your life have been like if you lived 100 years ago? 100 years from now?

Write about a blizzard. (Is it fun or frightening?)

Write about a pet. (one you want or one you have)

Write about owning and working at a mini-golf course. (or another fun-sounding business)

Write about a class picnic, or field trip or riding on the bus. (Is this some place you want to go or have to go?)

Write about what it would be like to have your mom or dad be the principal of your school.
