Hi! I’m Jennifer B. Jones, the author of Dear Mrs. Ryan, You’re Ruining My Life and The (Short) Story of My Life - two books that sound like they’re about me, though they’re really about two very different characters that I created. Here’s a little factual information about my life.
I’ve wanted to be an author since I was a little girl. Books have always been my most prized possessions. I love the stories in books, I love the way words look on paper, and I love how ink and paper and books smell! Maybe that is why I’ve always had my nose in a book!
When I was little, my parents read to me every night. Sometimes my dad would fall asleep while he was reading to me, and I’d have to go downstairs to tell my mom. Mom also enrolled me in the Book of the Month Club. I still have most of those books. My aunt sent me books for Christmas and those books are still on my bookshelves, too.
When I learned how to read, my mom gave me a notebook so I could write down the names of the books I read and the authors who wrote them. She gave me a gold foil star for every book I wrote down. The stars came in a little cardboard box and you had to lick the backs of them to make them stick. I loved to lick those little stars and put them in my notebook beside the growing list of book titles.
When I was in junior high, my goal was to read every book in the junior high library. I didn’t make it, but I did read a novel every day for almost two years!
Even though I’ve always wanted to be a writer, it took me a long time to figure out what I needed to do to make that dream come true. Being a reader is the best start to being a writer, but a writer has to write, too! I didn’t start writing till my own children were in junior high! Now I tell people that it is never too late to make dreams come true as long as you’re willing to do whatever work it takes.
